As such, this card also represents activism, passion, and creativity – and fighting for what is right even if it’s controversial. Even when I've used other decks to clarify a spread with this deck or used this deck to clarify other deck readings (at times RWS in both situations), this one has always been wildly accurate, even with reversals, which the guidebook does not have. It would be interesting to try a more original form of the treat, and likely less damaging to the world.

It is often tempting to ignore the roots of grief and sadness, just pretending that everything is OK or curling in a ball and hiding away. I once found a molinillo, the wooden whisk used to make the cocoa, in a flea market and didn’t know what it was, assuming it was actually some sort of strange rattle (I’m also a hand drummer and love finding different percussive instruments). It also includes some crafting ideas for each herb, which is a nice bonus way of working with this deck. So if it is a fire suit there are alchemical projects like tinctures and salves and if it is a number 4, the projects help to create boundaries. In short, this is the PERFECT plant to represent justice – folks need to consider evidence from both sides of an argument before making a determination, something that our society is not terribly good at. Accustomed as I am to the faces and personalities of the people depicted in full in The Gaian Tarot, I did find myself sometimes missing that human component and wanting to see who is “behind the scenes” of the beautiful herbal layouts, nature mandalas, works in progress, and the gnarled hands at work in The Herbcrafter’s Tarot. Depending on the suit and type of plant, some of the herbs are shown in the act of being prepared or harvested, in use in baths or teas, or in their native environment. I guess my advice would be that if you choose to learn tarot this way, it's best to go with a deck that has a theme that you love.

My own favorite spread, the one I use most often with any deck, is one I adapted from my friend Briana Saussy. Beginning with the premise that herbs are archetypes in botanical form, this deck builds on the traditional 78-card Rider-Waite-Smith tarot format to bring the magic of herbs into the hands of readers. Her newest project, The Herbcrafter's Tarot, was co-created with Latisha Guthrie and published by US Games in June 2019. Pachamama (world mother) is a sovereign deity of Inca mythology who represents all that is whole, beloved, and complete. These 4 or 5-star reviews represent the opinions of the individuals who posted them and do not reflect the views of Etsy. The cards themselves are slightly larger than the usual tarot card size, which I love, because the art deserves that breadth of space.
