As we’ve written about before, the part of the brain that activates when you’re doing ‘nothing’, known as the default-mode network (DMN), plays a crucial role in memory consolidation and envisioning the future. It’s also the area of the brain that activates when people are watching others, thinking about themselves, making a moral judgment or processing other people’s emotions. But how much opportunity have we created for ourselves to choose when we want to being a state of being? Another way to embrace the joy of doing nothing is to cultivate a sense of mindfulness. By focusing on the present moment and being fully present in our experiences, we can learn to appreciate the simple pleasures of life and find joy in the moment.

Dolce Far Niente” означава да живеем в настоящето - да се наслаждаваме на всеки миг така сякаш е последен - докато никога не забравяме, че животът е скъпоценен дар. Защото животът наистина е хубав. И нека никога не забравяме това.” Perhaps that’s why we feel guilty and anxious when we’re not working. Perhaps that’s why we continue to blindly adhere and bow down to our should’s and must’s, but fail to make time for ourselves to simply pause, reflect, and cast a gaze inward to ask ourselves these two imperative questions:How often do you focus on being in the moment, doing nothing? Whether it’s sitting outside at a cafe watching the world go by, whiling away the hours with your loved ones sipping a glass of wine or being immersed in nature at the beach taking in the sun, these seemingly ordinary moments are the ones that bring happiness in the long run and highlight the joy in living. One day, I hope will come, when to answer the question we often ask each other — “ so what do you do?”, we can take a long blissful breath, and say…. “nothing”. Breaks and time to do nothing can have positive impacts on our work because they provide space for thinking, inspiration and rest, but also remind us there is more to life than measuring our worth through our productivity. Infact, “I am busy”, has almost become a status symbol. The busier you are, the more important person you are in the world.

This album’s artwork is possible one of the scariest, with the giant eye looking down on a crouching, scared and naked man. Making the list, was either this song or “Animal Instinct.” But the horn section, anger-fueled lyrics such as Truth is, if we wish to be our best and most creative selves, we need to do more of that— be idle and do nothing. We need to shut off the engine, rest, and just be. We need to wind down and re-charge and allow ourselves to daydream. And we need to engage in active procrastination. We have several times more things we need to live comfortably. We spend our lives physically giving time to buy and maintain those possessions, and mentally spend time worrying about them. But as we fill our days with more and more ‘doing’, many of us are finding that non-stop activity isn’t the apotheosis of productivity. It is its adversary. But as anyone who has tried meditation knows, doing nothing is surprisingly difficult. How many of us, after 30 seconds of downtime, reach for our phones? State of being is where creation happens. In Indian language we call it ‘Shunya’. Literal translation might mean zero, but in essence it means nothingness.

You know that feeling you get when you listen to your favorite song? Or the feeling you get when somebody cancels a meeting? You’d probably categorize both as happiness, but they’re not exactly the same emotion. And, while there are plenty of English synonyms for happiness—such as joy, pleasure, cheer, glee, contentment—none of them really capture either feeling with much precision. Dolce far niente (literally 'sweetness [of] doing nothing, sweet idleness') is an Italian saying. The Sweetness of Doing Nothing explores the southern Italian philosophy of Dolce Far Niente to help you find pleasure in the everyday. Rid yourself of that needless pressure and irrational guilt. Do you ever pause to compare the usefulness of trees in a forest? No, you don’t. You simply see the beauty that lies in all of them, regardless of the scope of shade their branches offer or the type of fruits they bear. So why are you so judgemental of yourself? Some trees grow taller than others, some produce more shade than others, but all trees have a place in the forest, and all trees are allowed to simply be. And the same applies to you: It’s okay if you don’t produce much work today or tomorrow. So what? That doesn’t devalue you. And the world doesn’t stop spinning if you take a break. One of the most prominent features of Italian lifestyle is of course their good food! Food is an important part of the day and is not something to be rushed. Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in. A memory comes to mind when you mention il dolce far niente. When I was a child, my parents used to send me to stay with my grandmother while they were at work. She was a warm and caring woman who spent all day doing housework and taking care of her grandkids.

When we replace guilt with feelings of bliss, we begin to untangle what may be unrealistic expectations of productivity. All too often, when we are too busy rushing through life, we fail to notice the simple pleasures and certainly don’t make time for them. This is possibly my favorite of “The Cranberries” songs. I am not going to try and explain why this song is so amazing; if you listen to only one of the songs provided, let it be this one and form your own connection to it. It really is one of the most underrated songs, not only from the band but in the realm of music. We can and should try and be mindful of every activity we do. But to be in a state of being, the activity itself is mindfully chosen. Some may argue that 'dolce far niente' is a luxury that not everyone can afford. However, it does not have to be an extravagant or expensive activity. It can be as simple as taking a walk in nature, enjoying a cup of tea or spending time with loved ones.
