In 1989 Alexander Gabriel discovers Maison Ferrand, one of the oldest spirit brands in the Cognac region. The reputation of the House is indisputable but sales are lagging. Ovocná sladká vůně s banánem a meruňkou, květinovými tóny a vanilkou. Velmi sladké a husté v ústech s trochou alkoholu na začátku, karamelem a melasou. Potom následuje několik tónů sudu a kůže, které přetrvávají v dřevitém a suchém závěru. Skromná dochuť se dřevem, rzí a kovem. Tento rum není špatný, ale chybí mu komplexnost…“ Na Heurece většinou jen stručné ale mimořádně pozitivní recenze:Tak tuto láhev na polici v obchodě rozpoznáte ihned. Ať už bude ve vysoké pěkné nastajlované krabičce hnědé barvy, nebo bude jen tak samotná. Láhev (0,7 l) je jinak docela masivní a těžká se silným dnem. Při nalévání je to opravdu fajn pocit mít ji v ruce (jen ať vám při tom nepadne na nohu…). Majitel značky Alexander Gabriel nejprve doslova vzkřísil luxusní koňak Pierre Ferrand (ještě v roce 1989) a aby využil vzácných sudů, kde tento božský mok zrál, rozhodl se, že v nich budou pokračovat rumy. To make a perfect product even better - ther is the bottle. It is extremely heavy, has a nice straw-binding and a beautiful wooden cap. Just by looking at the bottle you see the difference between high quality and the results even more expensive products can not reach.

Alexander likes to talk about how they age their sugar syrup in barrels to, the way I see it, elevate dosage. Despite all the information provided re Barbados rum, the proposed GI and the different approach to rum by Plantation and its parent Maison Ferrand, you end up finishing the review by tarring all Barbados rum with the same brush in the statement: “If this is the future standard of Barbados rum, then I will not buy anymore Barbados rum in the future.” Irrespective of whether Maison Ferrand win or lose (hopefully lose) in their efforts to change the Barbados GI, the other producers are not likely to follow their lead and as such you should very much advise drinkers to try Barbados rum, but to encourage them to look at the rums from Foursquare, Mount Gay and St Nicholas Abbey distilleries.
