but Rand can be very proud of what he's stood for, often against what others more purely business-focused would likely advise against. Welcome to the startup world, where a good idea and a convincing pitch can kickstart the path to global dominance.

It's highly addictive to get core insights on personally relevant topics without repetition or triviality.Covering everything from his unhealthy decisions, his own unstable self and the mistakes he committed while building. It's exciting all the way to the end and has a nice mix of entertaining stories mixed with plenty of start-up advice and lessons. Established “big players” have had the ground cut from under their feet by upstart disruptors playing by an entirely different rulebook.

He demonstrates why he wishes he took an offer to be bought out by Hubspot years ago, despite the company's growth since then.I love how Rand openly shares the real stories behind hard decisions and failures, where you know his approach is always trying to do the right thing for people first. His transparency and knowledge sharing is visible in all of that content, Moz’s software and now this book. On the other hand, of 200+ employees the importance of 2-3 key engineers in the success of his company was absolutely critical, twice, and leads one to wonder, what if they didn't meet this qualification? A very small percentage of businesses have been built on the back of the chaotic, messy formula, but a thousandfold more have catapulted into nothingness. In Lost and Founder Fishkin reveals the mostly awful, sometimes awesome truth about startup culture with the transparency and humour that his hundreds of thousands of blog readers have come to love.

To me these biases are part of the appeal of the book, because you get to see his world view rather than an attempt at an objective reality. If you're interested in any of the topics above, from decision-making, to management, to organizational culture or product management, read this book. This book is an honest, generous, and useful look at what actually happens when you build a company, including the downs as well as the ups…I wish I had read it thirty years ago. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It's not so rosy and always rewarding as it's proclaimed and Rand has done a wonderful job of breaking those stereotypes with this book. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

The reason for that is simple: investors expect revenue from startups and know how to take care of their own interests. I found this book profoundly helpful and revealing for my work as the founder and CEO of a small but quickly growing online education business. However, I think the book rises well above this kind of company biography and offers us thoughtful takes on tactics and strategies to think about, anchored by experience. Me gustó mucho la transparencia con la que Rand cuenta las historias y principalmente los aprendizajes que sistematiza de cada situación.

Even if you disagree with some of his take-aways he does a great job of intelligently making each case. I, for one, wouldn't have got to the realization of the importance of these elements, had I not experienced the pain resulting from neglecting them - clear values, mission and a clearly defined culture, just to name a few. Rand explica, de manera muy honesta, cuáles son las ventajas y desventajas de las inversiones, de no vender tu emprendimiento pronto o tarde, la importancia de los valores fundamentales y por sobre todas las cosas lo valioso que es estar enfocado. After all, if you’re growing in one area while shrinking in another, you’re not really growing at all. Having employees on board with different backgrounds and skills provides a greater range of expert opinions and insights.
